Graphing calculators and mathematics education in developing countries.
Introduction
This article begins by presenting a brief description of three levels of curriculum and two visions of what it means to teach and to learn mathematics. Following, there will be a description of the implications of the introduction of calculators into the curriculum. Then there will be a consideration of the state of mathematics education in developed countries and the role of graphing calculators in the teaching and learning of mathematics in those countries. The state of mathematics education in developing countries will be described, from which, some of the risks and opportunities of the introduction of graphing calculators in those countries will be presented. Finally, ways will be suggested that developed countries and the international research community in mathematics education can support developing countries in such a way that the use of graphing calculators can be one of the means for initiating and supporting a process of change in the teaching and learning of mathematics.
